Visiting the Source: Our April 2024 Trip to Stanstead, Quebec

Stanstead Quebec Stone Circle

In April 2024, we visited Stanstead, Quebec through the Ontario Monument Builders Association (OMBA) for a conference focused on granite quarries and suppliers. It was a great opportunity to step away from the shop and see where the granite we work with every day actually comes from.

Watching a massive granite slab being gently pushed from the earth using air pressure. The people in the photo give a sense of just how large these quarry blocks really are.

Stanstead is well known in the monument industry for its long history of granite quarrying. Visiting the quarries in person gave us a new appreciation for the scale of the stone, the natural variations in colour and grain, and the care that goes into extracting quality granite.

We spent time visiting our granite suppliers, seeing their facilities, and talking directly with the people who cut, finish, and supply the stone.

Trips like this help us stay connected to our craft and continue learning. Everything we bring back—from material knowledge to supplier insight—helps us create better, longer-lasting memorials.
